Local League vs. Select vs. Rep Baseball

 

Choosing the right baseball program depends on your child’s interest, skill level, and time commitment. Local League, Select, and Rep baseball each offer unique experiences designed to support player development at different stages.

Caledonia Bears Rep Baseball
All players wishing to play competitive (Rep) baseball with the Caledonia Bears must live within the boundaries for Caledonia set out by Southern Counties and the OBA.  For any questions to whether you live within the Caledonia Boundaries, please contact the President at [email protected]

Please note that for those who are successful in being selected to and accepting a position on a Caledonia Bears Rep or Select Team, there will be an additional fees that are considered "Team Fees".  These will be due once all Rep and Select Teams have been finalized.  Team Fees pay for our Rep and Select Teams' jerseys, additional activities such as tournaments or additional training.  The Team Fees may differ somewhat from team to team depending on what each team plans for the season in terms of tournaments and activities.



Local League Baseball (Recreational)

Local League baseball is open to players of all skill levels and focuses on fun, learning, and community.

Key Highlights

  • No tryouts; open to all players

  • Emphasis on fundamentals, confidence, teamwork, and sportsmanship

  • Balanced teams for fair play

  • Typically, one practice per week

  • One home game, one away game per week

  • Local travel may include but not limited to Simcoe, Delhi, Port Dover, Walsingham

  • Season runs mid-May to mid-August

  • Lowest cost (CMBA registration fee only)

Best for: New or developing players who want a fun-first, low-pressure baseball experience.


Select Baseball

Select baseball bridges the gap between Local League and Rep, offering increased competition with a moderate commitment. Select team is IN ADDITION to Local League teams, were Local League teams are priority. Players must be registered as a Local League Player in the CMBA to be eligible to play CMBA Select.

Key Highlights

  • Tryouts held in April after Local League teams are formed 

  • Competes in the Hamilton District Baseball Association (HDBA) Select Loop

  • 5 home and 5 away games

  • Season is June- first 2 weeks of August and games will be on Friday, Saturday and Sundays, as to not conflict with Local League. Please note that games may include double headers.

  • Regional travel may include, but not limited to Hamilton, Ancaster, Binbrook, Burlington, Welland, St. Catharines, Thorold, Cambridge, Waterloo

  • Higher level of competition than Local League (U11 please note there will be live pitching) 

  • Additional TEAM costs not covered by CMBA registration fee may apply:

    • Select jersey (CMBA provides Local League Jersey)

    • Game costs (home games only) include diamond rentals and umpire fees

    • Additional team training and equipment

    • OBA team registration ($350 per team)

Best for: Players ready for competitive league play without the full travel and time demands of Rep baseball.


Rep Baseball (Competitive)

Rep baseball is for players seeking the highest level of competition and development. All players wishing to play competitive (Rep) baseball with the Caledonia Bears must live within the boundaries for Caledonia set out by Southern Counties and the OBA.

Key Highlights

  • Tryouts to create most competitive divisional team typically held in September

  • Competes in Southern Counties Rep Loop and OBA-sanctioned tournaments

  • Multiple weekly practices, games, and weekend tournaments

  • Travel throughout Southern Ontario

  • Season runs early May to early September, with optional winter training depending on coach

  • Additional TEAM costs not covered by CMBA registration fee may apply:

    • Home and Away Jerseys (league provides a practice uniform)

    • Tournaments

    • Addition training equipment

    • Winter Training facility rental

  • Coaching emphasizes advanced skills, strategy, and long-term development


Best for: Dedicated players who are motivated to compete at a high level and commit to an intensive schedule.
